Investigadores de la Universidad de Marburgo (Alemania) han inventado un medio eficaz y barato para producir luz visible, según publican en Science. Se trata de un compuesto de estaño y azufre, con ligandos orgánicos, que transforma la luz con longitud de onda en el infrarrojo cercano en otra blanca.Cuando un láser dirige la luz infrarroja hacia el compuesto, este altera su longitud de onda por un proceso de interacción fisicoquímico, generando luz visible para el ojo humano. Según los autores, el resultado es una luz cálida y blanca muy similar a la de una fuente corriente de luz halógena de tungsteno.Además, esta luz se pude dirigir de forma direccional, lo que favorece su posible aplicación en dispositivos como microscopios o sistemas de proyección. Otra ventaja del sistema es que sus materiales son económicos, escalables y fáciles de conseguir.
